We’re looking for a Senior Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET), who will own significant subsystems within our in-house testing framework, infrastructure, and proprietary tools aimed at enhancing QA processes, with a specific emphasis on test automation for Unreal Engine. You set technical direction in your area of expertise, partner with the Lead SDET on architecture and roadmap decisions, mentor more junior engineers on the team, and act as a deputy to the Lead SDET on technical matters when required. Your secondary focus is on supporting the Test Automation Engineers and QA teams in their testing efforts and ensuring the automation tools and frameworks effectively meet the team’s evolving needs.
Superpowers you have:
- 5+ years of professional experience in software development or a technical QA role, with at least 2 years in a senior or technical-lead capacity.
- Multiple shipped or live game projects, with at least one substantial contribution on Unreal Engine 5.
- Direct experience building or substantially extending proprietary test automation tooling, custom test runners, or build / CI infrastructure for game projects: including architectural ownership, not just feature work.
- Demonstrable experience designing (not just implementing) RESTful API endpoints at scale, including contract versioning, error semantics, and resilience patterns.
- Deep working knowledge of the Unreal Engine reflection system
- Demonstrated experience mentoring mid-level engineers and influencing technical direction across a team.
- Expert C# knowledge: deep experience with modern .NET, unit testing frameworks such as NUnit. Strong working knowledge of at least two of: ASP.NET, EF Core, Avalonia, Blazor, WPF (or similar technologies).
- Unreal Engine 5: strong C++ experience writing UE plugins; working with the engine’s reflection system; building gameplay subsystems; AActor lifecycle; Slate / UMG basics.
- Familiarity with UE input systems (EnhancedInput, input injection) is a plus.
- Experience designing and implementation of RESTful API endpoints, with a focus on scalability, resilience (timeouts, retries, health checks), and maintainability.
- Solid understanding of version control systems, mainly Perforce, with changelist-triggered automation or P4 API integration.
- Working experience with CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI, Jenkins, or comparable) and with embedding test runners (NUnit Engine API or equivalent), customizing the test execution lifecycle, and producing JUnit-style XML output programmatically.
- Working experience with engine-side profiling and performance analysis: UE Stat system, UnrealInsights, memory / GPU profiling, performance baselining.
- Familiarity with multi-process coordination, port management, or network socket programming.
- English Proficiency: advanced level, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- A proactive and collaborative mindset, with a strong ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment, but also autonomously.
- A strong sense of ownership and a commitment to delivering high-quality work.
- An eagerness to learn new technologies and to continuously improve your skills.
- Comfortable making architectural decisions under ambiguity and committing to them; able to communicate trade-offs clearly to both engineers and non-engineers.
- Demonstrated ability to influence technical direction and raise the bar of the engineers around you through review, pairing, and design conversations.
You’re a rockstar if you have:
- Familiarity with MVVM patterns
- Working experience with C# source generators and Roslyn
- Familiarity with test management and bug tracking software (e.g., JIRA, TestRail), and with their REST APIs / webhook automation
- Familiarity with server-side templating engines (e.g., Scriban, Razor) for structured document generation
- Experience with image capture, screenshot comparison, or visual verification tooling
- Computer Science degree or in relevant field
- A genuine passion for video games and a deep appreciation for the player experience
- Other programming languages are a plus.
Becoming part of Room 8 Group, you will:
- Own end-to-end design and delivery of significant subsystems within our test automation tooling, including API contracts, test strategy, rollout, and long-term maintenance.
- Set technical standards and patterns alongside the Lead SDET; drive architectural decisions in your area of ownership.
- Mentor mid-level SDETs and Test Automation Engineers; act as the primary reviewer on complex changes and unblock them on difficult problems.
- Partner with the Lead SDET on roadmap planning, effort estimation, and technical risk assessment.
- Investigate and resolve the hardest technical issues: including those involving engine internals, threading, performance bottlenecks, and build/CI failures.
- Design and deliver features across the test automation framework — including, but not limited to desktop applications, REST API endpoints, report generation and automated test design tools.
- Champion code quality through code review, automated test coverage, and ongoing refactoring of high-traffic areas.
- Collaborate closely with developers, designers, Test Automation Engineers and QA analysts to identify automation opportunities and ensure comprehensive test coverage.
